Football in Poland
The top league in Poland is the Ekstraklasa, with both Cracovia and Wisla Krakow playing in this division. The two teams have one of the fiercest rivalries in professional football, with their games being referred to as the Holy War. Whilst the level of football in the Polish league might not be up to what you see in the English Premiership, the fans in Poland are some of the most passionate in the world and the games are always a great display of noise and colour.
The league below the Ekstraklasa is called the I Liga, and compromises of 18 teams. The teams in this league are professional, with some of them still attracting up to 10,000 fans. The top two teams are promoted to the Ekstraklasa, with the bottom two teams being relegated and the third from bottom team going into a playoff to determine their fate.
Below the I Liga is II Liga which is split into two regions – East and West. Teams who are relegated from II Liga go into III Liga which is split into eight regional groups. The region for Krakow teams is called Małopolsko-Świętokr with three Krakow teams currently competing in it – Hutnik Krakow, Garbarnia Krakow and Wisla Krakow II team.
Underneath the III Liga is IV Liga which is split into 20 regional divisions. There are a number of teams from the Krakow area playing in this division, and also in the four divisions below which are also regionalized. In total there are nine leagues in the Polish football league system and even at the lowest level of football played in parks it’s not uncommon to see some ‘Ultras’ turn up with banners and flares.
